Comsat Angels

The Comsat Angels were a critically acclaimed post-punk band formed in Sheffield in 1978. Originally called “The Comsat Angels” after the “Com-Sat Angels” from Arthur C. Clarke’s novel Childhood’s End, they later shortened the name to simply “Comsat Angels” in some territories due to legal issues. The group became known for atmospheric guitars, dark emotional lyrics and a powerful, driving rhythm section, and are now regarded as one of Sheffield’s finest post-punk bands.

The band emerged from the same fertile Sheffield music scene that produced acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA and The Human League, though the Comsat Angels developed a more guitar-driven, emotionally intense sound.

Their debut album, Waiting for a Miracle (1980), is widely considered a post-punk classic. Produced by Peter Wilson and released on Polydor, it featured tracks such as “Independence Day” and “Sleeping in Secret.” The album blended bleak northern atmospheres with melodic songwriting and angular guitars. Critics often compare its mood to early Joy Division, though the Comsat Angels had a more expansive and melodic style.

A second strong album, Sleep No More (1981), followed and is often regarded by fans as their masterpiece. It featured dense production, haunting vocals and layered guitars, helping establish their cult reputation.

Despite enthusiastic critical support, the band never achieved major commercial success in the UK. However, they became highly influential, particularly among later alternative and indie bands. Artists connected to post-punk revival and atmospheric rock frequently cite them as an overlooked influence.

During the 1980s they toured extensively in Europe and the United States, building a loyal following. Their music evolved from stark post-punk into more polished alternative rock while retaining Stephen Fellows’ distinctive melancholy songwriting.

The group split in the mid-1990s but reunited periodically for performances. Singer Stephen Fellows later became involved in education and local politics in Sheffield while continuing occasional musical activity.

The Comsat Angels remain one of the great “lost” Sheffield bands — respected far beyond their commercial profile and admired for creating dark, intelligent and emotionally powerful music.
