Gomez are an English indie-rock band formed in the mid-1990s by a group of friends from Southport, Merseyside, later joined by vocalist and guitarist Ben Ottewell while studying in Sheffield. The classic line-up consisted of Ian Ball, Ben Ottewell, Tom Gray, Paul “Blackie” Blackburn and Olly Peacock. Their music blended indie rock, blues, folk, psychedelia and electronic experimentation, helped by the fact that several members shared songwriting and lead vocal duties.
The band first came together around 1996, rehearsing and recording demos in garages and rehearsal rooms before attracting major-label attention. Early rehearsals and showcases took place around Sheffield and Leeds, including Red Tape Studios in Sheffield and an early performance at Leeds’ Hyde Park Social Club. The unusual name “Gomez” reportedly came from a sign placed outside their first gig for a friend whose surname was Gomez; audience members assumed it was the band’s name and it stuck.
Gomez were managed by ex-Comsat Angel Steve Fellows and signed to Hut Records, a subsidiary of Virgin, in 1997 and quickly gained acclaim with their self-produced debut album, Bring It On (1998). Recorded partly on four-track equipment in a garage before being completed at Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios, the album mixed lo-fi experimentation with rootsy songwriting and won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 1998.
Follow-up albums including Liquid Skin (1999), In Our Gun (2002) and Split the Difference (2004) expanded their sound further, combining sample-based textures, classic rock influences and improvisational live performances. Although never reaching the commercial heights of Britpop stadium acts, Gomez built a devoted international following, especially through touring in Britain, Europe and the United States.
Ben Ottewell’s gravelly blues-influenced voice became one of the group’s trademarks, while Tom Gray later became prominent in campaigning for fairer music-streaming payments through the Broken Record initiative. The band have continued to reunite for tours and special performances, maintaining a reputation as one of the most distinctive British alternative bands of the late 1990s era.
