In the Nursery are one of Sheffield’s most distinctive and internationally respected underground music groups. Formed in 1981 by identical twin brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone, the band emerged from the city’s post-punk and industrial scene alongside acts such as Clock DVA and Cabaret Voltaire.
Originally influenced by the stark atmosphere of Joy Division, In the Nursery began as a harsh post-industrial trio with guitarist Anthony Bennett. Early releases such as When Cherished Dreams Come True (1983) and the Temper EP combined pounding percussion, shouted vocals and experimental electronics. By the late 1980s, the band had evolved into a more cinematic and orchestral sound, helped by the addition of vocalist Dolores Marguerite C and percussionist Q.
Their albums Stormhorse (1987), Köda (1988) and L'Esprit (1990) established their trademark blend of martial rhythms, classical arrangements and dark electronic textures. Over time, they became recognised as pioneers of the “neoclassical darkwave” style, creating music that often felt like soundtracks for imaginary films.
In the Nursery gained an international following through releases on labels including Wax Trax! in the United States, and later through their own ITN Corporation label. Alongside studio albums, the group became renowned for composing new scores for silent films as part of their “Optical Music Series.” Their rescored versions of classics such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Man with a Movie Camera and The Passion of Joan of Arc have been performed live at film festivals and arts venues around the world.
The band’s music has also appeared in film and television trailers, including material connected with Game of Thrones. Despite their international reach, they have remained closely associated with Sheffield, recording much of their work at their own Beehive Works studio in the city.
Still active more than four decades after forming, In the Nursery continue to release new music and perform live. Their 2022 album HUMBERSTONE reflected on family history and marked both the band’s 40th anniversary and the brothers’ 60th birthdays.
