Mark Stoney

Mark Stoney is a Sheffield-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and performer whose music blends indie rock, alternative, folk, baroque pop and acoustic influences. Although born in Croydon in 1980, he established his career in Sheffield and has become closely associated with the city's independent music scene.

Stoney first gained attention with his independently released debut album Amber (2001), on which he played virtually every instrument himself. His breakthrough came with The Scene & The Unseen (2006), an album that earned widespread critical praise during the mid-2000s resurgence of the Sheffield music scene. He toured alongside acts such as the Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T and Laura Marling, while developing a reputation for inventive songwriting and memorable live performances.

In 2009 he relocated to Austin, Texas, where he co-founded the band Bobby Jealousy, releasing two albums before returning to his solo career. His 2014 album More Than Animals received strong reviews for its ambitious arrangements and emotionally direct songwriting. Alongside his own recordings, he has worked extensively as a producer and collaborator with emerging artists and established musicians in both the UK and the US.

Since returning to Sheffield, Stoney has continued releasing new music, including the singles Swarm (2021), Half Made (2022), The Chase featuring Jade Castrinos (2023), and Ash In My Mouth (2025). In 2026 he marked the 20th anniversary of The Scene & The Unseen with a special hometown concert at Yellow Arch Studios and a limited-edition vinyl reissue of the album.

He remains an active figure in Sheffield's music community as a songwriter, producer and performer, known for combining classic British songwriting with eclectic arrangements that draw on rock, folk and alternative music.
