Milburn

2000 to date

An indie rock band formed in Sheffield in the early 2000s, they were part of the same vibrant scene that produced the Arctic Monkeys, known for tight, guitar-driven songs capturing the energy of working-class northern life. Their sound mixes mod-punk aggression with melodic hooks.

Milburn began around 2000, founded by cousins Joe and Louis Carnall with friends Tom Rowley and Joe Green. Their local shows at Sheffield venues like The Boardwalk quickly sold out, signaling their early promise. They were selected for Sheffield’s Red Tape Studio development program in 2002, gaining professional recording experience and a local following that propelled them toward national attention.

The band’s music draws on 1960s mod and punk influences such as The Jam, combined with the swagger of early-2000s indie contemporaries including The Libertines and Razorlight. Known for sharp riffs, brisk tempos, and observational lyrics, their sound became emblematic of Sheffield’s post-Britpop revival.

Milburn released two albums during their first run—Well Well Well (2006) and These Are the Facts (2007)—before splitting in 2008 after a farewell concert at Sheffield’s Carling Academy. Following a 2016 reunion, they returned to touring and new recordings, culminating in Make It So (2024).
