Negatives

1979 - 1980

The Negatives were a mod band (quite rare for sheffield) and were popular locally.

They released just one known single in 1980 on the Aardvark label: Electric Waltz backed with Mon£y Talk. Their sound blended sharp mod energy with punk urgency and early new wave style. BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel played “Mon£y Talk” on his programme in January 1980, giving the band a small but notable national exposure. They also contributed to the classic compilation album Bouquet Of Steel.

Soon afterwards, the group split up, leaving behind a cult reputation among collectors and followers of Sheffield’s underground music history.

The band have since been referenced in retrospectives about Sheffield’s post-punk explosion, including photography archives documenting the city’s alternative scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
