Formed in Sheffield in the early 1980s, Person To Person were part of the city’s post-punk and synth-pop explosion that also produced bands such as ABC, Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League. The group was founded by former ABC members including drummer David Palmer and keyboard player David Clayton, alongside vocalist Pete Eason. Their sound mixed polished blue-eyed soul, sophisticated pop and electronic production in the style of mid-80s new wave.
Person To Person signed to Epic/CBS Records and released several singles, including “High Time” and “Love On The Rebound,” before issuing the album Stronger Than Reason in the mid-1980s. The band also became notable for helping launch the career of designer Ian Anderson, later founder of The Designers Republic, who managed the group and created their artwork.
Although they never achieved the commercial success of some of their Sheffield contemporaries, Person To Person remain fondly remembered within the city’s music scene for their stylish pop sound and connection to the wider Sheffield electronic movement of the 1980s. Clayton’s major career step came when he joinedSimply Red. Meek worked with Joan Armatrading, The Outfield and many more as a session player.
