Formed in Sheffield during the first wave of British punk and new wave in the late 1970s, The Push were a lively, streetwise band best remembered for their 1978 single “The Cambridge Stomp.” Mixing pub-rock energy with the raw excitement of punk, they became popular on the Sheffield live circuit, playing venues such as The Limit, Mr Kite’s and Sheffield University while building a strong local following.
Fronted by singer and actor Ray Ashcroft, the band gained wider exposure when they toured the UK supporting XTC. Their line-up also included bassist Jeremy Meek, who later became a respected session musician. Despite growing momentum, The Push split soon after Ashcroft moved into acting, later appearing in television series including The Bill, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
Although short-lived, The Push remain part of Sheffield’s rich punk and post-punk heritage, remembered for their energetic performances and for capturing the atmosphere of the city’s late-1970s music scene.
