Reverend and The Makers

Reverend and the Makers are a Sheffield indie rock and alternative dance band formed in 2005 by singer-songwriter Jon McClure, widely known by his nickname “The Reverend.” Emerging from Sheffield’s vibrant post-millennial music scene alongside bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Milburn, the group combined sharp social observation with danceable indie rhythms, electronic influences, and politically charged lyrics.

Their debut album, The State of Things, was released in 2007 and produced by Richard Hawley and Ed Cosens. It featured the hit singles “Heavyweight Champion of the World” and “Open Your Window,” helping establish the band nationally during the height of the UK indie boom. Known for blending indie rock with electronic beats, funk, soul, and spoken-word influences, the band developed a reputation for energetic live performances and strong ties to Sheffield culture.

Over the years Reverend and the Makers have released a series of albums including A French Kiss in the Chaos, @Reverend Makers and Heatwave in the Cold North, continually evolving their sound while maintaining McClure’s socially observant songwriting. The band have remained an enduring presence in British indie music, closely associated with Sheffield’s musical identity and working-class creative culture.
