Vantennas

1961-64

The Vantennas were formed by three City Grammar school boys in 1961. Gary Young (singer) adopted the name Vince Young. The name Vantennas came from a tv aerial we saw in a shop in Sheffield centre. Jim Smith, Les's friend and neighbour joined to play rhythm guitar. Les's father was their first manager and they used to practice in the cemetery that he managed. Smith left in in 1963 to concentrate on his A levels. He is now retired with homes in Buckinghamshire and Sarasota.

Notable gigs included 13 Nov 1963 Sheffield, City Hall. Supporting The Rolling Stones. With The Big Three, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, The Sheffields, Johnny Tempest and the Cadillacs, The Four Plus One, Vance Arnold and the Avengers, Karen Young. Then in 23 Jan 1964 Sheffield, Sheffield University. With The Searchers, Pete Lloyd and the Strangers, and The Liverbirds.
