Ginger Baker is a name well-known in rock circles, thanks to his work with Cream and later the Baker Gurvitz Army, amongst many others. However, his roots were in jazz, where he worked in the late 1950s for Terry Lightfoot’s traditional jazz band, The Jazzmen. They were prominent during the “trad jazz” boom.
He then moved on to Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, The Graham Bond Organisation and later achieved much greater fame with Cream, Blind Faith, Hawkwind(!) and Ginger Baker’s Air Force, amongst others.
This gig may have been his first performance in Sheffield, aged only 18. He played the King Mojo Club in 1967 with Cream and later the City Hall with the Baker Gurvitz Army. The programme was found at a local car boot (we’re always happy to accept Sheffield music memorabilia)
