In all the press reports about the Leadmill in Sheffield none have mentioned that it was for a long time the UK international venue for jazz and blues.
Everyone played there – Art Ensemble of Chicago, Loose Tubes, Jon Scofield, Jan Gabarek, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Johnny Griffin, the George Russell Orchestra, the Mike Gibbs Band, Slide Hampton, Dudu Pukwana, Billy Bang, Dave Holland, Bobby Watson, Kenny Wheeler, Joe Newman, Courtney Pine, Anthony Braxton, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Guest Stars, Don Cherry, Ralph Towner and Oregon, Slim Gaillard, Bertice Redding, Lee Konitz, Abdullah Ibrahim, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Courtney Pine, Kenny Burrell, Memphis Slim, Lowell Fulson, Louisiana Red, Jimmy Witherspoon, Dr John, Brotherhood of Breath, Joseph Jarman, Henry Threadgill, Taj Mahal… The Sunday lunchtime Leadmill concerts became renowned too. As well as featuring the best local bands, international stars wanted to play there too, like Carlos Ward, Teddy Edwards, Harry Edison, Joe Temperley, Mark Murphy, Kenny Davern, Bob Wilbur etc.
This is very true Steve, Jazz isn’t usually mentioned with the Leadmill. We hope to feature more here…
