George Webster RIP

So sad to hear that George, co-founder of the Limit Club (with Kevan Johnson) has died. George was a DJ at the legendary Buccaneer pub and opened the Limit in 1978 and it rapidly became the go-to club in Sheffield. Countless bands, both famous and unknown played there over the years including Psychedelic Furs, Teadrop Explodes, Paul Young, Bill Nelson, Robert Plant, U2 and countless others. It was a regular haunt for many music lovers with queues to get in stretching down West Street.

I played there on many occasions with different bands and one band, named “Harriet” impressed George so much he managed us for a while. He lent me his gorgeous Rickenbacker and a Fender Twin and we rehearsed inĀ  a block he owned in Hillsborough Barracks, before it became a shopping centre. He could talk all night and had an endless set of really funny anecdotes. He had a “share” in Paul Young and played him some of our demos, telling us that Paul was interested in recording one (he never did, the sod).
