Neutron Records was one of the key Sheffield DIY independent labels of the late 1970s and early 1980s, closely associated with the city’s emerging electronic, post-punk and experimental scene. The label was founded in 1978 by members of the Sheffield synth group Vice Versa — principally Stephen Singleton and Mark White — because electronic and synthesizer-based music was finding little support from major record companies at the time. Rather than wait for outside interest, they adopted a fully DIY approach and created their own label to release music independently.
Neutron emerged during a remarkable period in Sheffield music when bands rejected traditional rock formats and experimented with: synthesizers, tape manipulation, electronic rhythms, art-school and futurist ideas, independent production and distribution. This wider Sheffield scene included: Clock DVA, The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, I’m So Hollow, , Artery, Vice Versa and related projects.
Neutron’s most historically important release was the 1980 EP compilation The First Fifteen Minutes, often regarded as one of the defining documents of early Sheffield post-punk and electronic music. The EP brought together several leading underground Sheffield groups and helped establish the city’s reputation as a centre for innovative independent music. Collector and scene histories describe it as an important record featuring Vice Versa, Stunt Kites, Clock DVA and I’m So Hollow.
The release proved especially important because it provided early vinyl exposure for several bands whose reputations later grew substantially. I’m So Hollow discographies still identify “I Don’t Know” as appearing on the Neutron EP.
Neutron was never a large commercial label. Its releases were pressed in small quantities and circulated through independent shops, mail order and local gigs, reflecting the DIY economics of the period. But its cultural importance outweighs its size: Neutron helped create the independent infrastructure that Sheffield music later relied on, paving the way for labels such as Aardvark, Native, FON and eventually Warp.
