Record Shops

We are attempting to pull together a list and log all retail shops in Sheffield which sold records at one time or another. Let us know about any old shops you used to know and love, like Curtis, Cann’s (seen right in the 70s), Virgin, Violet May’s, etc. This list goes back to Sheffield’s oldest record retailers Wilson & Peck, which opened around 1896. Many of shops had their own small record department selling 78s in the early 1920 up to the war and are know to us only though record sleeves printed up specially for them. From the 1950s on things settled down but there has been a rash of small indie shops in recent years, though many have come and gone very quickly!

You can also check out our “work-in-progress” map of Sheffield record shops.
