Bouquet of Steel

Aardvark STEAL 2
1980

Bouquet of Steel was one of the most important early Sheffield post-punk compilation albums, released in 1980 by the independent Aardvark label (catalogue STEAL 2). Rather than showcasing a single band, the LP gathered together a broad cross-section of Sheffield and South Yorkshire underground groups at a time when the city’s music scene was rapidly developing beyond punk into experimental post-punk, electronic music and art rock.

The compilation appeared during the same fertile period that produced acts such as The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA and the wider “Made in Sheffield” movement. *Bouquet of Steel* documented the grass-roots level of that scene — bands rehearsing in youth clubs, warehouses and small venues, often issuing music themselves through local labels and DIY networks.

Musically, *Bouquet of Steel* reflected the diversity of Sheffield’s underground scene in 1979–80. The LP is particularly valued because some featured groups — such as Disease, Veiled Threat and Repulsive Alien — left little or no other recorded material, making the album an important historical document. Other contributors later achieved wider recognition, notably Comsat Angels, I’m So Hollow, and Y?, who evolved into The Danse Society.

Collectors remember *Bouquet of Steel* not only for the music but also for its presentation. Some copies were pressed on coloured vinyl and included a 16-page booklet with band information and artwork, reinforcing its DIY Sheffield identity.

Today, *Bouquet of Steel* is regarded as a landmark Sheffield compilation — effectively a time capsule of the city’s underground scene at the moment post-punk and independent music were taking shape. It stands alongside compilations such as *Logical Steps* as one of the key records documenting early South Yorkshire alternative music.
