Great Sheffield was a Sheffield indie / alternative compilation CD released in 1989 on the Homar label. It documented part of the city’s late-1980s guitar and independent music scene, giving exposure to local bands that were often active around Sheffield venues, rehearsal rooms and record shops but had little national profile. Homar UK was founded by Marek Pryjomko and Howard Willey. The label assembled *Great Sheffield* as a showcase for local music and organised a launch gig at Sheffield University Octagon Centre.
The CD became scarce and collectible, partly because many featured groups released little else commercially and the pressing appears to have been relatively small. One musician later described it as difficult to find and remembered it as an important local snapshot of the period.
Great Sheffield occupies an interesting place in Sheffield music history: not part of the famous electronic wave of the late 1970s, and not a major-label Britpop release, but a grassroots snapshot of Sheffield’s independent guitar scene immediately before the 1990s.
