Logical Steps was one of the earliest South Yorkshire independent compilation LPs, released in 1980 by Future Earth Records (FER 003). Rather than being a mainstream commercial album, it was a DIY showcase of local punk, new wave, power-pop and ska bands from the Sheffield, Doncaster and wider South Yorkshire scene.
The album emerged during a period when local groups often had little access to major labels, so independent compilations became a way of documenting regional music scenes and helping bands reach wider audiences. *Logical Steps* followed this model, gathering tracks from a number of young bands onto a single LP and effectively acting as a musical snapshot of South Yorkshire around 1979–80.
Future Earth Records, the label behind the LP, was a small South Yorkshire independent associated with local releases and scene promotion. *Logical Steps* became FER 003, suggesting the label already had an active catalogue and local network. The LP reportedly came with a glossy picture sleeve and insert, typical of ambitious DIY independent productions of the period.
Today, *Logical Steps* is regarded by collectors and local music historians as an important document of early Sheffield / South Yorkshire underground music, comparable in spirit to later regional compilations that captured local scenes before many acts disappeared or evolved. Some tracks even received wider attention through John Peel interest and airplay.
