Johnson Electrics

227 London Road, Sheffield

Johnson Electrics was a Sheffield guitar and electronics retailer long before they opened their London Road branch. A former customer recalled regularly visiting the original shop near Berkeley Precinct on Ecclesall Road in the late 1960s, where they sold Fender, Gibson, Vox, Hagstrom, Hofner and other guitars, plus amplifiers and second-hand equipment.

Lesjay Music was the trading name used by Johnson Electrics for its musical instrument business. The name is generally believed to derive from the initials L.J. (“Les Jay”), associated with the Johnson family or proprietor. The company sold guitars, amplifiers, PA equipment and electronic components, first from Ecclesall Road and later from London Road. The photo below shows the shop after it had become a computer shop.
