Kenny’s Records

32 The Wicker

Kenny’s Records was a well-known second-hand and specialist record shop in Sheffield, located at 32 The Wicker during the 1980s and remembered fondly by collectors of rock ’n’ roll, R&B and rare vinyl. The shop grew out of an earlier business called Windmill Records.

When Windmill Records closed on The Wicker, it was reopened by Ken (“Kenny”), one of the shop’s former assistants, who renamed it Kenny’s Records. The shop continued the Windmill tradition of dealing in collectible and older records, and was also involved in mail-order sales and record fairs.

Kenny’s developed a reputation as an “oldies specialist”, attracting collectors searching for hard-to-find rockabilly, rock ’n’ roll and vintage vinyl at a time when Sheffield had a thriving independent record-shop culture. Local collectors remember it alongside shops such as Rare & Racy and Amazing Records as part of Sheffield’s strong second-hand record scene in the early 1980s.

The shop became part of Sheffield music folklore. Musicians and collectors, including people later associated with the city’s music scene, recalled visits to Kenny’s as formative experiences, with Kenny himself remembered as a deeply knowledgeable record collector and dealer.
