Here’s a well hidden record store! Wax At Moorgate (which seems to also be known as Wax Sheffield and Wax Vinyl) is in the basement of the excellent hi fi retailer Moorgate Acoustics. It is so well hidden that despite having been in the hi fi shop a couple of times, I didn’t know it was there, so thanks to city archivist Cheryl for giving us the heads up. “I lived on Broxholme Road for 15 years and remember it opening – nice little subterranean vinyl palace. You enter via a door on Broxholme Road and head underground!”
High end hi fi retailer Moorgate, which has been in business for over 40 years now, opened the Wax basement in 2019. It is open four days a week and the owners have really gone to town on the place, all painted black, nicely lit and the stock properly displayed (the photo is from their website). There is even a sofa for bored partners. Stock wise the vinyl looks mostly new and repress and they have CDs as well but we’ll check it out as soon as we can. The only problem is that you’re bound to get seduced by the pile of nice decks for sale, so watch your wallets.
